Business community welcomes stronger voice in Wellington’s economic future

Business Central and the Wellington Chamber of Commerce welcome the establishment of new business advisory groups for Wellington, describing the move as a constructive step toward stronger engagement between local government and the business community.

Wellington City Council has announced three expert business advisory groups to help inform a five-year plan of economic growth in the city.

The groups will focus on property, infrastructure and housing; technology, science, education and innovation; and arts, creative, hospitality and inner-city revitalisation.

CEO Hayley Horan, who has been appointed to the Tech, Science, Education and Innovation Advisory Group, said it was encouraging to see Council strengthening its connection with the business community.

"The establishment of these groups reflects the importance of bringing business perspectives directly into Council decision-making, particularly as Wellington works through economic recovery and long-term growth challenges.

"Businesses want to be part of the conversation, particularly on decisions that directly affect the city’s economic performance and vibrancy," she said.

"For many businesses, this will feel like a step in the right direction, knowing their perspectives are being heard more directly and consistently.

"Clear, consistent engagement helps build trust and leads to better outcomes for Wellington as a whole."

The announcement aligns closely with the Chamber’s recommendations in its Green Light Economy report last year, which called for formal and consistent business engagement to be treated as a priority action for Wellington.

"It is important for Wellington’s future that business and Council are more aligned on a shared vision for the city, Ms Horan said.

"We look forward to seeing how these groups operate in practice and to continuing to work constructively with Council to support a thriving, resilient Wellington economy."
